Preventing the Flu

  1. Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  2. Stay home when sick.
  3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing, with a tissue and then throw in trash.
  4. Wash hands often.
  5. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
  6. Practice good health habits such as adequate amounts of sleep, staying hydrated, eating healthy, managing stress and being physically active.

Well & Septic Permit Tracking Database

Environmental Health now has an online database for tracking all well and septic permits issued since January 1, 2004.  The current status of a permit that has not been completed can be found, as well as information on completed permits. Franklin County Welcomes New Health Director

LOUISBURG – The Franklin County Board of Health has chosen a new Health Director. The position received 13 applicants, nine of whom were certified as qualified by the State Health Director’s office, but one was a step above the rest.  Dr. Christopher M. Szwagiel has been recognized for his leadership and contribution to Public Health at the local, state and national levels. Over the last fourteen years, he has served as a County Public Health and Rural Health Network Directors in North Carolina and New York.  We are proud and enthusiastic to have him join our team and offer his expertise, to improve the quality of life for the residents of Franklin County.

Dr. Szwagiel received a Master of Public Health degree in Parasitology and Laboratory Practice from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and was subsequently employed as a Virologist by the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health. He went on to obtain a Doctor Public Health degree in Health Services Administrator from the University of Pittsburgh in 1993.  After completing his study, his focus was becoming a County Public Health Director.

He is an American College of Healthcare Executives Certified Healthcare Executive. He has been recognized for his contributions to Public Health by the North Carolina Alliance of Public Health Agencies, Inc., Western New York Public Health Alliance, Inc., Glaxo Wellcome Child Health Recognition Award Program, and North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Outstanding County Award Program.

Throughout his career, Dr. Szwagiel served on several community boards, in varying capacities. He was one of the original organizers of the Northeast North Carolina Partnership for Public Health and Western New York Public Health Alliance, Inc. He has been Principal Investigator/Co-Principal Investigator for several grant programs, and has authored, contributed to and reviewed several articles for various publications.

His professional interests include: Communicable Disease Prevention and Control; Quality Assurance, evidence based best practices, and coordination of care; Pedodontics; and, Public Health Emergency Preparedness. 

Dr. Szwagiel began his role as Health Director, on July 1, 2009.
